Tomato Virus In The Islands
There is a plant disease going around the hawaiian islands attacking growing tomato plants. In my garden I have four tomato plants growing in the ground and one in the topsy turvy planter. Unfortunately one of my plants have succumbed to the disease I believe, but before it took ahold of the tomato plant I was able to harvest many times over. This tomato disease stunts the growth of the leaves and then the leaves start to turn yellow and as the flowers bloom it's as if they just shrivel. I'm not sure what I'm going to do here but I am keeping an eye on my other four plants. I don't even think anyone knows where the disease came from either. I'm glad that virus only got 1 of your plants. Is this something 'they' haven't seen before? Tomatoes are much too valuable to lose!!
Gen-I'm not sure if anyone has seen this virus before but it's popping up all over quite a few of the islands out here. I really hope this is a passing thing but evidently it's affecting other vegetable plants as well they say.
Ugh. Boy, doesn't it seem like there are more things trying to ruin your crops than help them? Hopefully this new virus won't keep growing!
Yup, the best I can do is pray and real hard so that it does not affect anything else I am growing or I just might have to overhaul my entire garden, I just cringe at the thought of this!
Aloha,
it is here in Alaska. What I did for the first seedlings was boiled water with fertilizer. Then when they were larger I would do both boiled and tap water to get the plants use to the difference. Then go onto tap. The "virus" is actually not just a problem with the plant itself or even the flies. I am thinking it is in the water... and it is chemically induced.
I notice in Anchorage (as we have city water) the plants I grow are always stunted. But my cabin is well water and rarely ever stunt my plants and rarely have they died. Last year was different due to the mildly cool summer so no matter what I did.. my tomatoes were all stunted and never ripen correctly.
Boil some water and let sit over night and water that way... see what happens.

Upinak-you just might have something going there. But I don't use the city water I use rain water, I have a rain barrel that collects the rain from my roof and I only use this water no other. But I just might try what you've suggested, boiling my rain water.
